The sawmill is founded by two friends, Armand Carrier and Réjean Bégin. With just eight employees, the mill in Saint-Honoré-de-Shenley converts the wood and contracts out the finishing.
The owners invest in building a planing mill to bring the finishing process in-house. There are now 15 employees. High-tech equipment is purchased, which adds a night shift and some 40 new employees.
Dry kilns are added, expanding the service offering.
Once a small sawmill, Carrier Bégin is now a major lumber producer. The sawing equipment is razed and rebuilt bigger and better. This not only boosts production and product quality, but also enables the entire workforce to go to day shifts.
Despite the troubling economic crisis, Armand Carrier’s son Christian takes over ownership and control of the company.
In January, a fire completely destroys the planing mill. A new facility later resumes production on November 27, 2013. Investing $10 million in a 42,000 square foot building fitted with state-of-the-art technology, Carrier Bégin increases production again and hires another 20 new employees.
